The Liquorist, Greek Street, Leeds | Review

As soon as a new restaurant opens in Leeds, I always get a little excited. Last week I got the chance to visit The Liquorist, located on Greek Street in the location of what was previously the Living Room. A stylish cocktail and eatery.

I was a little apprehensive the refurbishment was going to be minimal and the place would feel exactly like the Living Room. However the transformation is somewhat brilliant. With the feel of an exquisite country summer house, the Liquorist is the perfect venue for sipping cocktails and the perfect hang out for "ladies who lunch".

The Liquorist, Greek Street Leeds

I started the afternoon with the  English Country Garden cocktail £8.15. A very refreshing and well made drink of Hendricks Gin, Elderflower liquor muddled with fresh cucumber, lime and mint served with apple juice over ice.

To start with I choose the oven baked creamy blue mushroom to start with £4.95. Now in all the restaurants I have reviewed for my blog I have never yet found a dish inedible, but this unfortunately was a badly thought out dish and well I simply couldn't eat it.

The mushroom was watery, the chives in the dish over powered any taste of blue cheese and there was a lot of raw onion in the filling (not what the menu stated) I personally can't stand raw onion. Basically a watery mushroom filled with cream cheese onion and chive, no taste of blue cheese. In addition presenting the mushroom in a shallow dish made the starter hard to cut to eat. The presentation of basically adding 3 cherry tomatoes and some rocket on top was a little bizarre and didn't go.

My friend ordered the battered prawns £5.45 which seemed a much better choice and I was told these were pretty nice.

For the main course I opted for the smoked haddock fish cakes £8.95 which were headed on the menu under the salad options. First impressions the portion size was huge, it was far from refined and not something I would of expected from a restaurant serving up classy cocktails, a place clearly aimed at a more sophisticated audience. Quite frankly I've seen more refinement in Weatherspoons.

Since the meal was headed under salad, I was expecting something far better than un-dressed lettuce, tomato and spring onion in two heaps on the plate. The fish cakes however tasted pleasant but would of benefited from more seasoning. In addition to the two mounds of salad, the two giant fish cakes the meal also came served with a form of apple salad. My only guess as to why this was is someone cooking the meal thought how can we make this look a little fancy and unusual...I know lets make a salad from apple by adding some dressing, to well slices of apple.

As if the meal wasn't large enough then out come a portion of free chips. Now Who could complain at free chips, well "skin on fries" but there was no need at all to overwhelm me with more food.

My friend choose the ribs. Again presentation was lacking but these did actually look good. The meat fell clean of the bone, so for slow cooked ribs these couldn't really be faulted. Again served with skin of fries but this worked with this main to help mop up all the sticky BBQ sauce.

Desert was a redeeming factor for me. We were recommend the Cherry Pie £4.25 by the waiter and the desert was really good.  Crumbly sweet pastry, plump juicy cherry's and melting ice cream sat on top.

We ended the meal with a round of coffee. Well I say coffee, I had an espresso Martini £7.95 and Jess choose one of the more unusual and exciting looking choices of chocolate orange hottie £4.35 (hot chocolate and orange liquor topped with marshmallow and cream). Despite my criticisms of the food the cocktails seriously can not be faulted.

Now I didn't drink all these cocktails during the meal. I had previously been to the launch night the week before so had a chance to try a mix of drinks from the menu.

The Liquorist, Greek Street Leeds

Passion fruit bellini £9.15

Rock tail £8.15 (Vodka, Red bull, fresh lime juice, with strawberry and passion fruit puree, served long) plenty of alchol for your money, a strong cocktail with a passion fruit after taste.

The Liquorist, Greek Street Leeds

Lemon meringue pie - £8.15 (lemoncello, absolute citron, vanilla sugar syrup, lemon juice, topped with flamed egg white and vanilla foam). An all round amazing and flamboyant cocktail tasting exactly like a comforting piece of lemon meringue pie.

The Liquorist, peanut butter and jelly cocktail

Strawberry Bellini £9.15

Peanut butter & Jelly Martini £8.15 (Raspberry vodka, raspberry liquor, hazelnut liquor, milk & Cream, shaken with peanut butter and topped with caramel popcorn).
Defiantly a desert cocktail, containing two of my favourite liquors chambord and frangelico I was simply in cocktail heaven. I would say this tasted more like a jammy dodger than anything else but simply delicious.

We moved the furniture so we could dance

I was looking for a netted ballet style skirt for months at the beginning of the year. I finally found this midi netted over lay skirt when I was in Forever 21 in Times Square, back when I visited New York a few months ago.

This skirt and overall outfit combination has been my favourite now since I purchased it. I don't think I've yet to wear this skirt without some one stopping me to ask where it's from. In which I reply like a complete big headed cow and smugly answer "New York". Although since it was actually Forever 21 it's available in the UK and online. It's got the twirl factor, a bit of glam and looks classy...if I do say so myself.

This was the 3rd night of the holiday. A few quick outfit snaps then time for the evening meal, followed by (not ashamed when I say the next line) KIDS MINI DISCO. I obviously didn't take part but quite frankly wish I could. It brought back so many childhood memories, holiday songs have not changed at all. Who remembers "Es a no no no, Es a no no no" I even rememberer the dance moves...holiday classic right there! Impressive.

As you will know since returning from Corfu I've been to Zadar since, such a beautiful city. I think aiming for 7 holidays this year, greedy gut, I know. It's a little ambitious but since I'm now already on 3 it seems possible. Fingers crossed.

Also let's all give a little thanks to Hayley for been my holiday photographer.

Now I'm heading out for the bank holiday weekend for, well, more cocktails! What's your plans this bank holiday?

Summer menu at Gusto, Cookridge, Leeds

Well I landed back from my holiday in Zadar (Croatia) this morning and have a serious case of the holiday blues. However the horrendous delayed flight and missed train connections back home may steer me away from planning more holidays for a little while. Luckily I can still experience a little taste of summer as one of my favourite Italian restaurants in Leeds, Gusto,  have just launched there new summer menu.

No summer lunch would be complete without kicking of with a round of cocktails, I think it's safe to say over the past few weeks, I've sampled more than my fair share.

I went for the dessert peach which was something more unusual than I have tried before and I wasn't exactly sure what to expect with a mix of wine and gin but the flavours worked in a way I wouldn't expect. I'm not sure the mix would be great for a hangover though. My friend opted for a classic Martini which included fresh thyme.

Gusto, Cookridge, Leeds

Cocktails
Lemon and thyme Martini (Bombay sapphire, limoncello, dry vermouth, lemon bitter, sugar syrup, fresh thyme)

Dessert peach (sweet wine, peach purée, lemon juice and Bombay dry are built in a glass, with a touch of soda and a float of red wine)

Starters are always my favourite part of meals as I've said so many times before. Plus the cheese lover in me jumped for joy when I spotted goats cheese on the menu.

I ordered bruschette with the sweet pepper compote and goats cheese. I can't quite think of a more summery food combination I like more then the mix of sweet roasted peppers and tangy goats cheese. Hayley went for the chicken salad with again the goats cheese and red pepper, I never order salads on menus as I always find them a bit boring and bland but it Hayley said it was nice and had a nice amount of chicken etc in for a starter.

Starters:
Bruschetta with sweet pepper compote and goats cheese

Romesco chicken salad, with goats cheese, red pepper, rocket and aged balsamic

Next was the main course or "star of the show". I ordered the roasted duck breast and was certainly happy with my choice. I love duck but always panic it will be fatty or not cooked right. I can confirm the duck was cooked pink in the middle exactly how I ordered it and was certainly not fatty at all. The carrot purée was maybe a little too creamy however and wasn't the best of accompaniments for the rich duck. The pickled radicchio worked a little better for me.

I didn't try Hayley's gnocchi, although she seemed fairly quiet whilst eating so I will take that as a good sign.

Main course:
Pan roasted duck breast,
with carrot and star anise purée, pickled radicchio and red wine jus.

 Oven baked gnocchi,
with spicy nduja salami, caramelised onion, red pepper and tomato.

Before desert it was time for another round of cocktails. I ordered the Milk and honey cocktail, although unfortunately I didn't enjoy this too much. The vodka and Bacardi combined make the cocktail far too strong for me and the taste of cream was lacking so all I could just taste was the milk and vodka, unfortunately no flavour of honey.

Cocktails:
Dessert peach (as above)

Milk & Honey (Krupnik honey vodka, Bacardi ora, milk and cream, stirred down then strained into a Martini glass with fresh raspberries to finish)

Gusto, Cookridge, Leeds

Desert however could not be faulted. I was pretty full by this point so opted for a refreshing lemon sorbet. Hayley couldn't resist and choose the strawberry and passion fruit mess. I must admit I couldn't resist digging my spoon into Hayley's desert and having a taste. Fresh strawberry and passion fruit, cream and crisp meringue....I think I've said enough.

I ended my summer evening with a delicious amaretto coffee.

Hit the lights | Outfit Post

A little outfit post from my recent Holiday to Greece. As you will already know I've been away,  although I don't have holiday blues too much as I'm heading to Croatia on Saturday.

For me part of every beach holiday, is the routine of getting dressed up on a night and having new dresses to wear. Surely it's not just me who buys new clothes and doesn't allow myself to wear them before the holiday?

Dress - Miss Glam*
Clutch bag - Juicy Couture
Shoes - Top Shop (old)

This rather stunning metallic high neck dress is from the clothing website Miss Glam. They have such a range of evening and day dresses at such affordable prices. This metallic dress retails for £16.95 so you can't go too wrong. If your like me and find you don't always get much wear from evening dresses the website is worth checking out as the dresses are cheap yet excellent quality.

The dress is simple yet elegant. I was concerned the material would be a little itchy but it was perfectly lined and conformable to wear. The back was a little tight, so I planned the outfit for the first night just in case I accidentally got sun burned. My top tip for holiday dressing is save your loosest fitting clothes for the end of the holiday, in case the sun isn't too kind to you. (or if your like me and find the all inclusive food and drink too tempting)

Sunday night is pub quiz night

I will be the first to hold my hands up high and admit I'm a lover of the great British pub quiz. More so when say pub quiz is held in my favourite cocktail hotspot /  garden shed The Botanist.  In honour of supporting forget me not, children's hospice, I teamed up with Hayley, Gabby and Kel to compete for the honour of becoming crowned "pub quiz champion".

Whilst of course, sipping cocktails and tucking into gooey and Camembert.

Before the quiz began we indulged in nibbles and cocktails. A new addition to The Botanist cocktail menu is the Brewers and Botanists. A beer with a cocktail chaser, designed to perfectly compliment one and other. I ordered number 3.

I'm quite frankly amazed this is A| an actual thing & B| shocked I've never seen it before. I was more so wowed by the big wave larger which had the most pleasant after taste of mango. The idea is to get beer drinkers to sample more cocktails and vice versa. Although if you want my opinion it's a way to get more alcohol for your pennies and it's now proven it's socially acceptable ordering two drinks at once, outside of a festival. FYI the cocktail chaser tasted like holidays over ice.

I've never once though of a cocktail complimenting a beer and vice versa, I think we always think of our drinks to compliment our food instead. Be assured this is fantastic. The more I think about it the more I can't wait to go back just for this.

The Botanist Leeds

No trip to The Botanist for me would be complete without cheese, olives and pate in a plant pot.Every time I got to The Botanist I'm always in awe of the amazing presentation and brilliant home cooked style food. Although the range of food at the botanist and more "sit down meal" menu options, are all to die for, you simply cannot beat ripping apart bread and dunking it into cheese with friends.

The Sunday night pub quiz was split into 5 rounds, your standard questions, most of which had a music theme played by the pianist. A round of riddles and say what you see. A more unusual round of singing "Old McDonnald had a farm"...shall I explain this?? All you need to know was it beat watching country files on a Sunday night. With a round of animal making from pipe cleaners and everyones favourite round...beer tasting!

The Botanist Leeds

All quizzed out and exhausted from all the "thinking" and laughing I ended the evening with another cocktail. If you've been reading my blog a while you will know I favour cocktails over deserts.

I choose The Chocolate Rose cocktail to end my evening on "Vodka, rose liqueur, rose syrup, liquid chocolate, milk, cream". A rather drinkable, Turkish delight tasting drink which went down a little too easy....Taxi for Sammie.
